Fatty acids are one of the three basic components of a soap base. Common fatty acids that are used to make soap include: shea butter, coconut oil, and sesame oil.

Lye, which is also referred to as sodium hydroxide, is the ingredient that is needed to turn water and fatty acids into soap.
